Street fest + street meat = happy me!

While the clouds have returned this Tuesday morning, I am still radiating the lovely sun from the weekend, and what better way to soak it up than enjoying a street festival. West 4th was closed from Burrard Street all the way to McDonald and the crowds came out to enjoy.

There were five stages, one huge garage sale, and endless goodies in between.

The Tacofino truck looked too good to pass by without trying out.

Maybe the best steak taco I ever had, the mango salsa was a great addition.

This is my Pad

My Pad Thai, I admit right up front that this is far from a truly authentic Pad Thai, but what it is, is easy, fresh and delicious!

I slice up green onion, cilantro, simply wash bean sprouts and whisk some eggs.

Dice up chicken (I put prawns in when I have them) toss in a bit of salt, pepper, cayenne or paprika.

This is where I cheat heavily, all recipes I look up usually have about ten things to put in the sauce and I just don't have them all on hand. I use this thai sauce and doctor it up with lime juice, rice wine vinegar and sesame oil.

Some must need condiments!

Saute the chicken first and remove then scramble the eggs, add the veggies and re-add the chicken, throw your rice noodles in, drench in sauce and eat up!!

The Lonely Polygamist

"...Families are Forever, and [she] wondered if the slogan was meant as a promise or a threat"
- Brady Udall, The Lonely Polygamist

Sometimes I can’t remember where I stumble across books and how they get added to my ever growing “to-read” list. Sometimes it is an eye-catching book cover, sometimes it pops up in the “we suggest” box when I am perusing the Amazon or Chapter’s websites and sometimes it is all in the title, as was the case with The Lonely Polygamist.

A lonely polygamist? That is kind of an oxymoron wouldn’t you say? Well Golden Richards, the title character of Brady Udall’s book, has four wives and 28 children and yeah, he is pretty depressed and lonely. Currently lying to his family about his current work situation (renovating a brothel in Nevada) and still mourning the death of his favorite daughter, Golden is at a loss for where he fits in with his community and family and is struggling with the overwhelming feeling that he is an epic failure in all facets of his life. Trish, his youngest and newest wife, and Rusty, a middle child in a sea of middle children, are also given prominent voices within the narrative.

While I respect that people should be able to choose their lifestyle there are stories of polygamist families that kind of give me the creeps (i.e. TLC’s Sister Wives), but Udall’s tale is humorous, heartbreaking and quirky, a portrait of a group of a family who maybe wouldn’t have chosen each other if not for circumstance and at times a bit of force, and are now at a “make-it or break-it” moment on whether they can or even want to make this family unit work, resting all their hopes and expectations on the hulking shoulders of their Golden boy. Pick it up if you want a new tale of the un-ordinary American family!

GO FISH!

Looking across False Creek

The ladies enjoying the sun while we wait

After a beautiful bike ride around False Creek, myself and some Amis decided to brave the 30 minute line up and then 30 minute wait for our food at Go Fish! Located just past Granville Island along the sea wall it is hard to miss with a lineup snaking around this little fish shack! Sadly I don't have pictures of my grilled salmon tacones (I just dove in too fast to breath, let alone take a picture) but as you can see the view can't be beat and on a sunny day the wait doesn't seem that bad.

The tacones were chock-a-block full of fresh grilled salmon, their signature coleslaw and cilantro crema all wrapped in a flour tortilla, they look small but are decievingly filling! The asian flavoured kick of the coleslaw was a nice change from the usual standard salsa. As good as these were, I think next time I am going to have to go straight to the fish and chips, the piping hot halibut filet covered in a crunchy beer batter that I watched my friends eat made we want to get back in line!

Go fish is the perfect locale for an easy going day where time is not an issue, don't get discouraged by the line up because it is well worth the wait.
